The Information and Communication Technology Resource Centre (ICTReC) at Crawford University stands as a cornerstone of the institution’s technological infrastructure, playing a pivotal role in enhancing the university’s educational and research capacities. The centre, led by a Director who reports directly to the Vice Chancellor, is currently undergoing a comprehensive renovation, aiming to solidify its position as a hub for digital learning and examinations.
Once renovations are complete, ICTReC will house 288 computers, all connected within a single network that is specially designed to support teaching, examinations, and advanced research in computer networking. The centre is structured into four sections, each containing 72 computers. While one section is already fully operational, the remaining three are in varying stages of completion. Upon full completion, the ICT Resource Centre will be equipped to host high-stakes external examinations, including those administered by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
A standout feature of ICTReC is its capacity to provide a private and secure environment for examinations, with each computer housed in individual cubicles. This not only guarantees student privacy but also ensures that the integrity of exams is upheld. The centre’s reliance on a set of inverters for power allows for almost uninterrupted electricity, which is critical for maintaining continuous operations, particularly during examinations and important university functions.
ICTReC is at the forefront of administering computer-based examinations across various faculties at Crawford University. With the centre’s advanced systems, multiple-choice questions can be efficiently administered, with students being assessed across a wide range of topics within a course. The automated scoring system ensures that results are available immediately upon completion, allowing for timely feedback to both students and lecturers.
The e-learning capabilities of ICTReC significantly enhance students’ practical learning experiences. Since all 288 computers are networked, educational software can be hosted on a central server and accessed by every student, facilitating smoother and more interactive learning. For instance, practical lessons in accounting software and other specialised programs become more accessible and easy to master with this technology-driven approach.
The ICT Resource Centre offers invaluable hands-on training for students specialising in computer science and ICT-related disciplines. By engaging with the centre’s robust network, students can gain practical experience in configuring, managing, and troubleshooting network systems in a controlled and educational environment.
One of the standout features of ICTReC is its provision of critical University services that require constant online connectivity. With round-the-clock power supply and network availability, the centre ensures that essential academic and administrative functions remain uninterrupted.
In collaboration with external contractors, ICTReC is responsible for providing wireless internet access across Crawford University’s campus. This service ensures that students, faculty, and staff have reliable access to the internet for academic research, communication, and other necessary online activities, contributing to a digitally connected university community.
The ongoing development of ICTReC is in line with Crawford University’s broader vision to become a leader in higher education technology. As the centre nears completion, it is expected to serve not only as a resource for the university but also as a certified examination centre for external bodies. Its capacity to host external exams like JAMB and WAEC will place it at the forefront of digital examination venues within the region.
Furthermore, the availability of extensive computer networking and power systems positions ICTReC to contribute to advanced research in fields such as computer science, data analytics, and digital innovation. With continued investment and upgrades, the ICT Resource Centre is set to become a beacon of technological excellence within the university and beyond. The ICT Resource Centre is more than just a facility for computing; it represents Crawford University's commitment to integrating modern technology into education. By providing essential services like CBT, e-learning, and practical training, alongside its ambitious expansion plans, ICTReC is poised to enhance the academic experience for students and foster an environment of innovation and digital competence.
