The department was established in 2005 at the inception of the University. The Department houses two programmes: B.Sc. in Accounting and B.Sc. in Finance. Since the graduation of the first set of the Department in November, 2009, it has continued to respond to the manpower needs of the Nigerian economy.
The Mission of the accounting programme is to provide an opportunity to students from varied backgrounds wishing to acquire knowledge and ethics in accounting, to learn and develop critical judgment and ability to observe, analyze and synthesize accounting and financial data for problem-solving in going concerns. Meanwhile, the Mission of the Banking and Finance programme is to train students in all aspects of banking and finance, to acquire knowledge for application to a range of problems in a variety of settings in order to be employers’ first choice.
The Accounting programme, which has been duly accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and also accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), has produced several graduates whose performance in various industries, both at home and in the Diaspora, is quite heart-warming. As a result of the richness in the content of the accounting curriculum, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) UK recently gave us recognition and Accreditation with several exemptions for our students. The department has enjoyed support from ACCA through regular interactive internal and external sessions that educate our students on the needs of the employment world, bridging the class and the industry through interactions with Captains of industries. The ACCA accreditation offers our students the opportunity to qualify and be internationally relevant, recognized, and to participate in the global market.
This is the 5th edition of the Student’s Handbook of the Accounting programme. This edition covers a period of four years, 2022-2027. Since the last edition, adjustments have been effected in the course curriculum to align with NUC benchmarks and as approved by Senate; and these have been incorporated into this edition. The University Senate, however, reserves the right to make changes to any part of this edition at any time it deems fit.
This Handbook has carefully presented details of the academic programme, the course structure, contents, and credit loads. It also provides information on admission requirements, regulations governing awards of Degrees, and regulations on the conduct of examinations.
Both Lecturers and students will find the Handbook very useful from time to time for guidance. Students are particularly enjoined to relate well with their level advisers, supervisors, and Programme coordinators for clarification on any aspect of the Handbook that may require clarification.
Finally, I wish to express my profound appreciation to all those who have contributed to the success of the preparation of this 5th edition. I am particularly grateful to the Dean, Programme coordinators, and the entire Academic and Non-academic staff of the Department.
