In keeping with its mandate for the implementation of the Second Phase of the University Programmes, the University Senate, at its statutory meeting of May 15th, 2014 approved, inter alia, the establishment of the Department of Mass Communication.
The Department of Mass Communication thus came into existence in year 2014. Its establishment was borne out of the need to give opportunities to teeming students who are desirous of honing their skills, and thus become excellent practitioners and professionals in the various aspects of Mass Communication.
This maiden edition of the Student’s Handbook covers a period of two years – 2014 to 2016. This revised edition covers 2023 – 2028. The courses offered are consistent with current academic vision and development goals of the University. Although the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Degree in Mass Communication shall be awarded to qualified graduates at the end of their undergraduate programme, students would have the opportunity to specialize in the major aspects of Broadcasting, Journalism, Public Relations and Advertising.
This Handbook has carefully presented details of the academic programmes, the course structure, contents and credit loads. It also provides information on admission requirements, regulations governing awards of Degrees and regulations on conduct of examination.
To reflect its disciplinary diversity which is the essence of communication studies, the Department has on its staff list, academicians from diverse academic backgrounds, some of whom are from core Mass Communication/Sociology, while others are from Language Arts, English Language, Instructional Technology, Theatre Arts, etc.
Both Lecturers and students will find this Handbook very useful from time to time for guidance. Students are particularly enjoined to relate well with their level advisers, supervisors, and Programme Co-coordinators for clarification on any aspect of the Handbook that may not be clear to them.
Finally, I wish to express my profound appreciation to all those who have contributed to the success of the preparation of this revised edition. I am particularly grateful to the Dean, Programme coordinators and the entire Academic and Non-academic staff of the Department.
Any correspondence on this book should be addressed to the Head, Department of Mass Communication, Crawford University, Faith City, Igbesa, Ogun State.
