Briefs on Department of Social Science

The Department of Social Sciences at University of Crawford having two disciplines: viz-sociology- the mother of Social Sciences including Law, and Political Science and International Relations. Sociology studies the ways that social structure and Interactions shape human experience. Sociologists seek to understand the full range of social institutions and practices from the dynamics of couples and small groups to shape of social organization such as work and the family to the functioning of communities, cities and whole societies. Sociological method of research are diverse ranging from the quantitative analysis of large surveys to qualitative approaches such as in - depth interviewing, participant observation, focus groups discussion and historical investigation. The department encourages students to study issues from a variety of perspectives and to develop a 'sociological imagination' that enables them to analyse social arrangement and problems. For example as from the long vacation 2015/2016 all the 300 Level students will undergo compulsory three month practicum in any organization of their choice approved by the department, thus blending theories with practical realities on the field. Crawford University will be the first in the country to introduce practical into its curricula. At the end of 4 year course, students are made to write original essays under a close supervision by faculty members.

Political Science and International Relation: This discipline exposes students to basic concepts of institutions that have to do with political behaviours of groups, in all setting from communities, LGAs, even on to the international levels. Comparative political systems are dissected for students with a view form them to develop their interest on political behaviour such as electioneering, conduct of election, different views of governance such as democracy and totalitarianisms, issues of representativeness, political empowerment, and all historical political perspectives globally are given prominence in this department. At the end of 4 year course, students are to made write original essays under a close supervision by faculty members. The faculties include experts in all courses approved by the NUC for the University during the last accreditation exercise. Whether the goal is to become an informed citizen or an expert in a special field, the department offers the tools and knowledge to help students make sense of the world around them.
